Embracing the Journey: Being a Creature of Habit with Natural Hair
If you’re on a natural hair journey, you know that it’s not just about the look—it’s about the lifestyle. Embracing your natural hair requires a bit of patience and a good solid routine. And honestly, being a creature of habit can make all the difference.
Without habits, you would be paralysed by endless confusion of what to do from the moment you wake up each day – whether to eat then shower, shower or eat, wash your face or brush your teeth, brushy your teeth or wash your face etc.
Habits can be so so comforting. Now lets think about this in terms of haircare habits, If you follow the same routine each washday, then you mostly know what to expect. What your hair likes, how it will react to certain products, tools and technique. Being a creature of habit (with some wiggle room) has played a huge part in consistent healthy hair growth for my girls and I.
Why Routines Matter
Think of your hair care routine like a good skincare regimen. When you consistently moisturize, deep condition, and protect your hair, you’re bound to see some amazing results. It’s all about those small, regular actions adding up over time.
1. Consistency is Key: Just like hitting the gym or maintaining a skincare routine, your hair needs consistent care to thrive. Regularly moisturizing, conditioning, and protecting your hair will show in its health and growth.
2. Less Stress, More Joy: Knowing what to do and when can take the stress out of your hair care routine. Instead of fretting about what products to use or what steps to follow, you can enjoy the process as a form of self-care.
3. Get to Know Your Hair: Over time, sticking to a routine helps you understand your hair’s needs and how it reacts to different products. This means fewer bad hair days and more confidence in your mane.
Building Your Hair Care Routine
If you are just Starting out or revamping your routine? Here’s a simple guide:
1. Identify Your Hair Type: Whether you’ve got:
Fine or thick strands
Thick or coarse strands
Density
Scalp Health
knowing and understanding your hair type and the health of your scalp will help you with your routine methods.
2. Stick to Basics First: A solid routine includes detangling, cleansing, deep conditioning, moisturizing, and protecting. You can add fancy treatments like hot oil treatments as you go.
3. Set Your Schedule: Decide how often you’ll wash, deep condition, and moisturize. Maybe you wash weekly, deep condition bi-weekly, and moisturize every 3 days.
4. Pick Quality Products: Invest in products that work for your hair type.
Cheaper is not necessarily better, It’ll cost more in the long run!
5. Listen to Your Hair: Pay attention to how your hair responds to your routine and products. If it’s thriving, great! If not, don’t be afraid to make adjustments.
Sticking to Your Routine
Consistency can be tough, but here are some tips to help:
1. Set Reminders: Use your phone or planner to remind you of your hair care tasks. Turning these actions into habits will make them second nature.
2. Make It Fun: Turn your hair care routine into a relaxing ritual. Light some candles (time permitting :-), play your favourite music, and enjoy pampering yourself.
3. Track Your Progress: Keep a hair journal or take progress photos. Seeing how far you’ve come can be super motivating.
4. Find a Hair Buddy: Partner with a friend on their own natural hair journey. Share tips, encourage each other, and keep each other accountable.
To conclude, Your natural hair journey is uniquely yours, and being a creature of habit can help you celebrate and care for your beautiful head of hair. With a consistent routine, you’ll not only see improvements in your hair’s health but also enjoy the process of taking care of it. So, cheers to embracing your natural hair and the habits that keep it thriving!

😩 ok…so this post spoke to my soul…I fell out of a consistent routine & recently really thought about the importance of being very intentional with my hair care regimen. I guess it’s time to break the old habits of constantly saying…‘I’ll moisturise tomorrow’ and just seize the moment!
Lots of helpful tips, love the idea of having a schedule written down. Time to be intentional…like truly intentional! 🙌🏿 & knowing that the process doesn’t have to be laborious.
thank you for reading, so glad it spoke to you 🙂
It’s that consistency even when you dont feel like it! THAT!
